Pennie’s Place: Orchid Haven

As we embark on our Self-Expression Challenge (Mar 2014), we share with you a few gorgeous scenes from Pennie’s orchid haven where she has 70+ potted orchids. All are meticulously cared for and nurtured, and the result is a stunning display of  shapes, colors, markings, patterns, and beauty.

Pennie's Orchids #7

As you might imagine, Pennie’s creativity is not without rhyme or reason. Her systematic approach is based on regularity and familiarity. By this way her plants thrive. She also adds that “diversity in growing orchids brings the opportunity to explore their beauty.”

She seems to have the ability to keep a maximum number of plants in bloom year-round. All the photos featured here were taken Friday afternoon, Feb 28, by yours truly.

Here I should add that I am a “point-and-shoot” picture-taker, so all credit of these photos goes to the subject, not the “photographer.”

These photos represent just a few of the vibrant and dazzling display of flowering orchids in Pennie’s orchid haven in our very own Harwood, MD.

Thank you Pennie for sharing with us your beautiful creative expression that neatly represents the field of aesthetic science, that which brings beauty to this world.

  2. These orchids are stunning! A feast for the eyes! Your green thumb is inspiring. Coaxing these tempermental beauties is truly an “aesthetic science” , taking tender care and patience. Thanks for sharing them.

  3. Great to see everyone enjoying Pennie’s wonderful orchid haven…

..Just wanted to add that when I was back at Pennie’s house recently then further orchid research was done. Some (or more) have no scent at all while others are very, very fragrant.

So add that to the mystique of the orchid!!

  4. Pennie – your orchids are stunning! It brightened up my day looking at your photos while sitting cooped-up inside. I am a huge fan of orchids and have a few myself. I have a specific one that while it was dropping its blooms and looking nearly done for, new buds were appearing and some were even beginning to bloom. I thought that was such a beautiful representation! It was a great post for the self-expression challenge, and thank you for sharing.

  5. Wow, Pennie, amazing! Do you have a greenhouse? What food for the soul! And I miss you by the way, but congrats on your life transitions!

    1. Annie,

Thank you for your note about my orchids. They are a labor of love and a passion of mine. I do have a small greenhouse but do not grow the orchids there in the winter as it too cold and difficult to keep the greenhouse warm. I grow my orchids inside in a bright sun room. I miss you too but will see you soon at yoga.

  6. These are beautiful! I also have some orchids. I appreciate the care you take to encourage blooms. Curious, what do you feed them? I think flowers are food for the soul! Thank you for sharing…..

  7. Tina,

Thanks for your reply about my orchids and the care and feeding required. It is all about having a system so that they are getting watered on a regular basis with the right temperature and feeding. I use two orchid foods, one is Jack’s Orchid Bloom Booster, 3-9-6 and Jack’s Orchid, 7-5-6 for growth. The first one is used when they are spiking to encourage blooms and the second one for growth. You can buy both at Homestead or Ace Hardware. If you wish to share the types of orchids you are growing, I can provide more detailed care instructions. Enjoy your orchids.

  8. Truly Pennie has orchid thumbs!
After her visit to attend my orchids
I have had great blooms from my orchids!
Thanks Pennie for sharing and caring. :)))

  9. Woo, absolutely breath-taking! I have only phaleonopsis (sp?) but a couple have rebloomed this month on their own. I’ll try your feeding recommendations for sure.
