Yoga Day At Chesapeake Montessori

One of our longtime yoga moms – Sarah – invited our yoga instructor, Kate Spano, to lead some yoga sessions at the Montessori school that her children, Ellie & Evan, attend. Here below are a few photos from this event as well as Sarah’s account of the day. (Click to enlarge any photo.)

First we have Kate (left) guiding participants into Warrior III – using the circular shape invites participation and interaction.

Montessori Yoga Day #2

About the day Sarah, writes:

Chesapeake Montessori School (CMS) participated in National Yoga-Recess Day on Monday 2/24/2014 for the 2nd year.

We had just about every student participate in yoga from the youngest primary children (ages 2-6) through elementary (ages 6-12) and adolescence (12-14). Kate was one of 4 volunteers who led yoga practice for the children throughout the day.

When I was leaving that Monday, an elementary student came up to me and asked, “Excuse me. When is the next yoga day?” And I responded, “I’m not sure, but probably not until around this time next year.” And then he said, “Hmmm… How about tomorrow?  I think we are free tomorrow!”

Ellie’s favorite pose was “frog pose” and hopping across the lily pads (aka yoga mats). And Evan was very innovative when he created the snail pose during Kate’s class.

One student suggested we try bear pose and another girl chimed in, “No. I don’t like bears. They kill.” So, Kate transformed bear pose into teddy bear pose and all were happy.

One thing I noticed is that all of the children loved yoga – it gave them a unique opportunity to blend body movement with imagination.  It was a lot of fun and overall we had a great day! Looking forward to next year!!

And when it was all said and done – there was nothing left to do but relax and contemplate the cosmos.

    1. That is probably a little young, but you can sing kiirtana to them and hold them in meditation. As for physical movements, just let them do what they like to do…
