My Story: Saving $50 per Month

For some years, I had a cell phone plan with T-Mobile and paid between $75 – $89 per month. Then a few years ago I got the then new Google Pixel phone and saw they had an offer for something called Project Fi. I inquired about it and learned that it was a phone plan that would save me a lot of money each month. And that is exactly what has happened as my typical monthly bill with Project Fi over the last few years is around $29.

Note: I have never had a bill of more than $38, and it was only that high once because of a power outage where I lost Wi-Fi at my house.

In the last week, Project Fi concluded is 3-year test period. Now it is called Google Fi and they have opened it up to all types of phones – not just Google phones.

Who Saves with Google Fi

If you are really pleased with your plan or have a great family plan etc, then by all means stick with it. But if you are up for looking into something new that really might lead to some serious savings, have a look below.

In a nutshell, here are the parameters of how the billing works with Google Fi – see if it might be suitable for you.

  • $20 unlimited talk and text per month
  • $10 per GB of mobile data usage each month (Key Point: This gets pro-rated to the exact amount you use so you never get charged for what you do not use.)
  • Free mobile data after 6 GB of usage each month (This is a safety, but if really you use 6 GB of data each month then this plan will probably not save you anything, and may be more expensive.)

The strategy here is that if you have Wi-Fi access most of the time and do not use a lot of mobile data, i.e. when not on Wi-Fi, then this might be a very good way to go.

For instance, at the time of writing this blog post, over the last 30 days I have use 13.69 GB of Wi-Fi data, but only 0.33 GB of mobile data over the last 20 days – still I have 10 days to go to close out the month. But at my current rate it would be about 0.5 GB of mobile data for the entire month, which is quite typical for me. That means the charges on my account would be $20 for talk / text + $5 for data + approx $3.50 in taxes and fees, bringing my total monthly bill to $28.50. Here is their billing formula.

The key point is to know how you use your phone and exercise a bit of restraint when on your mobile plan. Essentially, all that means is not watching videos or listening to long podcasts when not on Wi-Fi. Everything else on your phone – email, social media posts, GPS / maps etc – hardly uses any data. Streaming audio and video is what gobbles up data.

But…first do your homework.

Call Google Fi (855.825.5234) and / or check out their FAQ. Find out if your phone is compatible – including many Droids and for i-Phones I believe it has to be a 5S or newer. And then see how the coverage is for your area. Finally, be sure that the above described data plan would help you save each month compared with your current plan. Also, if I can be of any help, just let me know.
