20120410_202153Meet Janel and hear about her interesting life transition.

As we know, the field of yoga is vast from conception of mind to physical postures and every aspect of life in between. It all counts in building the human personality – and that is what yoga is about: The development of self.

Janel, a regular in our classes, decided to open up one of those doors of yoga that truly impacts one’s way of daily living. See what she did, how it helped her, and where her journey might lead.

Do listen to her honest and forthcoming interview below as she has lots to share.

Update Saturday Apr 14: This morning in class someone inquired why Janel became a vegan. So I asked her to respond in a few short lines and here is what she said.

Janel’s reply: The starting point for switching to a vegan diet began in class, believing that extra weight was a hindrance to my practice.  It really is Satyam’s fault.  When your yoga teacher extends that thought that food can change the way you feel in a matter of weeks, I knew I would give it a try!  It has made a world of difference.

  1. Inspiring! I’m on that vegan journey as well….really enjoyed hearing how you arrived at that path. Have you tried seitan? It’s pure wheat gluten, so not good if you are avoiding that, but it’s got a very chewy texture and lots of protein…also tempeh is good – it’s a fermented soybean product…Whole Foods carries them both. So glad you shared your story. It is encouraging!

  2. Annie, glad to see that my story is encouraging, it is encouraging to get your reply! Have yet to try seitan, will pick it up this weekend, thanks! Love tempeh! Any websites/books to recommend?

  3. Janel,
I loved hearing your podcast. I am constantly trying to feel better, and less puffy and full! I used to be a vegetarian, more for moral reasons toward animals, but found it so hard to maintain and started eating meat again. (mostly chicken and fish) My problem is I just crave protein, and can’t tolerate gluten, so it gets a little challenging. I am still in the contemplative phase ( I just cut out mammal meat and most dairy), and still have a family of meat lovers that I am constantly up against and have to cook for, but it helped to hear how it “lightened” and “enlightened” you. It was inspiring.
    Thank you!

  4. Hey Janel – I love this book as a basic guide to veg cooking….when I first became a
vegetarian, I didn’t know the first thing about cooking grains, lentils, all that stuff..between my daughter Frannie and this book, I feel much more comfortable with it:

    http://www.amazon.com/How-Cook-Everything-Vegetarian-Meatless/dp/0764524836/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334625249&sr=1-1

And I subscribe to Vegetarian Times and love it…got lots of great recipes from it! Most are vegan or give vegan alternatives….will you send any good finds you have my way? I love trying other folks’ favorites!

  5. Mary Beth, thank you for my mantra, “lightened and enlightened,” Keep contemplating! There are lots of great suggestions already on this blog!

Annie, thank you for the great recommendations! Will get on Amazon and get that book. I wonder if there is a Vegan Times? Will surely pass along good finds. You already have a great Tofu French Toast recipe, don’t you?

Satyam, great find in I Eat Trees.com! Signed up for their mailing list! Thank you.
