Welcome to the Sprouting Challenge – November 2016!! This is a great way for those new to sprouting to dive in and experience how easy, simple, tasty and cost-effective this is. And those advanced sprouters are invited to share their techniques. Keep reading to learn more about this challenge…

What can be sprouted? The wide world of sprouting offers innumerable possibilities. Basically anything that is a seed, bean, or legume can be sprouted. Hence one may sprout sunflower seed, radish seeds, mung beans, clover, broccoli, lentils, pumpkin seeds, alfalfa, chick peas (many varieties), green peas, and so much more.

How do I sprout? Simply soak your seed or bean for 6, 12, or 24 hours depending on its size. The larger the seed or bean, the longer it will need to soak. If you are soaking for more than six hours it is generally recommended to drain the water 2 or 3 times in a 24 cycle and fill it back up with fresh water. Usually a ratio of 3 parts water to one part seed or bean will work well. Here is a good guide / timetable chart for soaking and sprouting. After the initial period of soak which allows for germination, then all you have to do is rinse and drain your seeds / beans twice or so every 24 hours. I am offering sprouting jars which make this process extremely easy.

Benefits of sprouting: Fresh, tasty, highly nutritious food at your fingertips, literally. No dirt, no mess, just add water and watch. In contrast, store-bought sprouts are pricey and usually somewhat rotten or slimy, especially at the ends. Whereas you can grow sparkling fresh sprouts and eat them as they peak. When your sprouts have matured to the degree you like them, they can be stored in a zip-lock bag in the fridge. If you plan to keep them for more than a few days then rinsing them (in the zip-lock bag) will enable them to last longer.

    And in general, really nice to see all the interest in the sprouting jars. Glad we got them when we did. The website that offered them at such a great deal just tripled the price!! Just in the last 12 hours.

    Anyway, glad that many of you were able to take advantage and get set for some serious sprouting!!!
