Local Biz: Creative Cakes by Jennifer

Yogi thinkers have professed the need for local economies and self-sufficient, socio-economic units known as samajas. In that spirit, from time to time, I thought it important to highlight local businesses – ones you might never have heard of. Today is our first feature: Creative Cakes by Jennifer of Shady Side MD.

As you might imagine, Creative Cakes by Jennifer is owned and operated by, well,  Jennifer – who else. Jennifer Gustavson that is. As far as I know, she is flying solo on this mission, yet doing oh-so-well.

Jennifer’s speciality is making cakes for any occasion – and she has the know-how to back that up. Check out this creation aptly titled – “Under the Sea Cake” – made for a special someone’s sweet sixteen just a short time ago.

Jennifer writes: Each layer was different, chocolate with fresh strawberries, vanilla and then lemon on top…:)

I think you will agree with me in saying that this is a real work of art – culinary art that is. She certainly lives up to her name: Creative Cakes.

And it is not just birthdays. Jennifer can design, bake, and present a splendid cake for absolutely any occasion!! Some of her recent themes include: “Basket of Flowers Cake”, “Fishing Cake”, and even a “Tie-Dye Cake”.

So now you may be asking where I can get such a cake for that most special occasion, or perhaps just as a way to celebrate even the most ordinary of days. Well Jennifer does all of the baking right out of her town home – generally on the weekends.

But there is more – she has a great Facebook page that has info about how to contact her, as well as so many incredible pictures of her unique cakes.

I should add that Jennifer is also a long-time participant in our classes; and, her two high-school aged children and her husband have also been known to come!

So there you have it – a neat local business you may not have known about: Locally-owned, Locally-operated, and, yes, Locally-Loved…
