Backbend Challenge: June ’18

For the month of June we shall be embarking on the “Backbend Challenge” with new aspects each week.

The Backbend Challenge will be divided into four segments: June 1 – 10, June 11 – 17, June 28 – 24, and June 25 – 30. Before delving into the description of phase one, let’s examine why backbends are so important.

2. Improves posture / counteracts hunching
3. Gives energy / fights off lethargy
4. Strengthens back muscles
5. Prevents spasms
6. Maintains lordosis

June 1 – 10: Backbends in Everyday Life

The first phase of the Backbend Challenge will focus on practicing some type of standing backbend after specific junctures of everyday life.

(A) After Getting Out of the Car

 

(B) Every 15 Min of Gardening or Yardwork

 

(C) Getting Up From the Desk

 

(D) After Carrying a Load

The Practice

At each of the above juncture in our daily life, do 3 or 4 backends. Inhale into the pose; hold the pose and your breath for 8 seconds, then exhale back to an upright position. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
