“As You Think, So You Become….”
“As You Think, So You Become…”
The environment we live in externally & the one we create internally have a big effect on our mental status…
Although humorous, the below cartoon is quite true in many ways. As opposed to focusing on the dog’s version, let’s investigate the human side.
The Key to Happiness
The yogis say, Yádrshii bhávaná yasya siddhirbhavati tádrshii – “As you think, so you become.” This equation is tremendously meaningful for human beings. It empowers us to manifest ourselves in remarkable ways, and alerts us of the pitfalls and dangers of cultivating degrading or destructive thoughts. And there are two basic ingredients that affect our thinking: The greater social ecosystem and our own inner world.
Today’s greater social ecosystem is materialism. And that is what the subject in the above photo is suffering from. His mind is engaged in all kinds of materialistic longings: buying a new car, traveling to another place, procuring more money, purchasing a new house etc. And that is harmful in two main ways – (a) the person cannot enjoy the present, and (b) in thinking about inanimate objects the mind becomes more static and crude. The outcome is that it ruins his peace of mind.
Remember the equation: As you think so you become.
So we have to be careful about getting caught up in the trappings of the greater social climate, i.e. materialism, and we should be conscious and mindful to goad the mind toward more subtle thinking. One of the best ways to do this is by contemplative activities and meditation.
The theorem, as you think so you become, is very empowering and aspirants will always be keen to use this to keep the mind basking in happiness and bliss.
